Gavin Johnson is ready to fire Colchester United ever nearer to the Coca-Cola League One promotion play-offs and hopefully earn himself an extended contract.

The 33-year-old, currently operating on a six-month deal, netted his third goal in as many games as the U's slammed Doncaster Rovers 4-1 at Layer Road on Saturday.

He would love nothing more than to keep his scoring run going at Hartlepool this afternoon.

He told the Evening Gazette: "The most I've ever scored in a season is six or seven for Ipswich a dozen years ago.

"And the most I've ever scored in successive games is four, also for Ipswich, spanning two seasons back in the early 1990's.

"I haven't scored too many since then, but I'm playing in a similar role these days so who knows how many goals I might finish up with this year."
