Thurrock were denied a win when their Welsh visitors equalised on 90 minutes through Darren Jones.
After chances at both ends Thurrock took the lead late in the first-half through Tresor Kandol's penalty after a foul on Cliff Aku-rang.
But Newport equalised straightaway through Jamie Moralee's head from a Jason Bowen cross.
Colin McBride's side looked set for all three point seven minutes from time when, after Lee Hodges was brought down on the edge of the box, the ex-West ham and Southend man lashed home the free-kick.
But, after Dave Collis had cleared Moralee's goalbound header off the line, Darren Jones smashed home a free-kick in virtually the last action of the afternoon.
