Taxi drivers could be using a bus lane in Laindon within two weeks.
Cabbies complained while work was being carried out on the Five Links estate, the diversion would cost passengers an extra £1.50, unless drivers were allowed to use the bus lane in Laindon Link.
Now Basildon Council has given its support to the taxis and has launched a consultation into the matter.
If there are no objections, the lane will be open to taxis by September 13.
A taxi spokesman said: "Now we just have to push to be allowed to use other bus lanes."
