An 'exciting' project to transform a redundant railway building into an arts and rehearsal building is on track
The £750,000 project to breathe new life into the Engine Shed at Wivenhoe station car park and build an extension won approval at last night's planning committee meeting
The 100-year-old building will be used as a community-based arts centre hosting shows, rehearsals, art exhibitions and day and evening classes.
Wivenhoe Community Association bought the listed building, which is classed as "at risk", from Railtrack three years ago for £1.
Association chairman and town mayor Peter Hill said: "The hard work begins now. It's a significant step forward." He said planning permission will help the association apply for grants.
It plans to work with the Mercury Theatre, the Minories, Essex University and further education colleges to create a community-based centre.
Councillors approved the application once the notification period passes on September 3 and said they wanted to ensure noise issues are dealt with, perhaps with windows being fixed shut and air conditioning installed.
