Coastguards have praised police actions to stop trespassers creating havoc along the Canvey seafront.

They said police had deterred youngsters from using the Occidental jetty, near Hole Haven, as a diving board.

A warning was issued by officers at the beginning of the month after a seven-strong gang of teenagers were spotted jumping off the jetty into the water.

Police were concerned there were strong tidal currents in the area, as well as mud, which could trap unsuspecting waders and swimmers.

Coastguards were also frustrated the youths were trespassing on private land. But they said the situation had dramatically improved.

In a letter to police, Paul Roberts, branch secretary of the Hole Haven creek Coastwatch station, said: "This watch station is at the end of a jetty in a reasonably remote part of the island.

"Being over water at all states of the tide, youths seem to think they have a right to use it as a diving platform.

"They do not have any right as it is private property and entry is forbidden to unauthorised persons."
