A pub in Braintree was burgled after thieves hid upstairs while the building was being closed for the night.
A number of people stayed on the first floor, which is used as living quarters, of the Mr H pub in East Street, Braintree, and then came downstairs after the pub was locked up.
They forced open the door to the bar and then forced open the cigarette machine removing the cash box, which contained an unknown amount of cash.
It is also believed they may have stolen an amount of cigarettes. They also forced open the amusement machine and stole money from the cash box.
A spokesman for the pub said: "They must have been hiding in the kitchen upstairs."
