A worried mum today claimed children's lives are in danger after traffic was diverted off Canvey's busiest road and sent through residential streets.

Angry - Jackie Berkeley tries to cross the Long Road with little Ellie-May Picture: ROB BROWNE

Jackie Berkeley, 42, of Jasmine Close, said the repair work on Long Road has sparked traffic chaos in other areas of the island.

Hardest hit are Thorney Bay Road and Craven Avenue. Mrs Berkeley said: "It's an accident waiting to happen."

Long Road was shut last Monday for emergency work on a cracked sewage trunk.

It was originally expected to take four weeks, but was extended to eight because of poor ground conditions and now could take up to 12.

Full-time mum Mrs Berkeley said: "I tried to cross Thorney Bay Road on Tuesday with my eight-month-old daughter in the pram and it took ten minutes.

"It's a complete nightmare. There was just a continuous flow of traffic."

Mrs Berkeley called for measures to be put in place so pedestrians can cross more safely - and quickly.
