Karl Duguid could be back in action for Colchester United in four to six weeks' time.
The U's club captain, who missed the final ten games of last season and hasn't played this term so far, told the Evening Gazette he is going to have an injection to hasten the cure of his injured knee.
He said: "I saw a specialist earlier this week and he suggested I had the injection to get me over the final hurdle to full fitness.
"If everything goes to plan I should be back playing in a month to six weeks' time.
"The specialist is 99 per cent certain the injection will work.
"He also said I have no other problems in the knee.
"They were hoping that rest throughout the summer would make the knee right, but it didn't work.
"I've been out six months and was hoping to start the season, but every time I struck the ball in training it sent a bad pain through my knee."
