Vicious Scott Callaghan has been jailed for three months for a brutal machete attack which left his victim in a mental hospital.
Jailed - detectives say machete attacker Scott Callaghan is a danger to the community
A 28-year-old man was slashed as he tried to protect two women friends who were being verbally abused by Callaghan in High Street, Canvey, near the Seaview mini-mart, last November.
Callaghan, 29, of Point Road, Canvey, was jailed for three months for slashing the man, who is now receiving treatment at Runwell, across both arms.
Callaghan admitted a charge of common assault and was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court.
But he will serve nine months in prison because he was out on licence from prison for a previous offence of causing grievous bodily harm when he committed the crime.
Detectives investigating the unprovoked attack, which happened last November, were satisfied with the result.
Det Con Darren Patterson, of Canvey CID, praised the public for their help with the investigation after an appeal.
He said: "He is behind bars for nine months, which is a great result. Fortunately, the injuries suffered by the victim were minor, but the attack was frightening for him."
