Motorists face months of chaos on the A13 in Leigh as roadworks continue into next year.
Work has already been completed from Southend town centre to the Elms pub at Leigh and the final £1.5m phase will allow the road to be improved as far as the boundary with Hadleigh, just past Thames Drive.
The final phase of the council's work to improve traffic flow and public transport facilities on London Road has to be finished by 2006 to ensure Government funding is available for further work.
Brian Kelly, Southend Council's transport cabinet member, said he hoped there would not be as many problems as there had been with earlier parts of the scheme.
He said: "There are not so many shops and businesses along the A13 through Leigh as there was on the first two phases of the scheme.
"The problems would appear to be at the junctions with Eastwood Road, Hadleigh Road and Thames Drive."
