A landmark office block on a prime Southend seafront site could be redeveloped to provide a hotel, casino or a state-of-the-art conference centre.
Esplanade House, next to the old gasworks in Eastern Esplanade, has been described as an eyesore, but the block commands outstanding sea views in a prime position.
The building has been bought by developer Robert Leonard Group, which is behind the development of the Ambassador five star hotel next door to Esplanade House on the gasworks site.
Leading members of Southend Council are hoping the group, which is also working on plans for a restaurant, bar and bistro on the nearby corporation loading pier, will want to develop the empty block too to complete the transformation of the area.
Anna Waite, executive councillor for planning and regional development, said she would welcome any imaginative proposals for the site.
