Motorists in Billericay are set for more delays next week as work starts on resurfacing a busy main road.

Parts of Stock Road, which links Stock, Galleywood and Chelmsford with Billericay, are to be dug up and relaid. Work will start on Tuesday and is expected to last two weeks.

Parts of the road are worn and pot-holed. Two patches, one outside St John's School and the other at Stock Road's junction with Potash Road and Queens Park Avenue, have been identified as in particular need of repair.

Drivers heading in and out of the town could face lengthy delays.

A council spokesman said: "This work will see timed signals in place and the road reduced to one lane in places. We would advise motorists to plan their routes before leaving home and, if possible, take an alternative route to their destination."

The Stock Road resurfacing is one of three big projects. Engineers have been at Sun Corner, at the southern end of Billericay High Street, installing a roundabout. As part of the scheme, Laindon Road will become a two-way street.

Work is also under way on the reconstruction of the High Street pavements.
