Neil Cochran equalled the course record in a competition at Rochford Hundred over the weekend, but didn't win.
Scratch player Cochran fired a gross 65 to equal Steve Weidner's best ever score two years-ago, only to lose out to 13 handicapper Roger Fearn who returned a net 64 to win the Larkin Cup.
On a weekend of superb scoring, 32 of the 117 players competing shot net par 71 or better.
Cochran got off to a flying start with birdies on the opening three holes. He went on to birdie four more and par 10 with his only blemish coming with a dropped shot on the 17th. Cochran now plays off plus one.
But Fearn, whose handicap was cut to 11, enjoyed three birdies plus eight pars in his 77-13=64 to pip the luckless Cochran.
Charles Kingdon (79-13=66) just got the better of Richard Barnbrook (67-1=66) and Stuart Alliston (71-5=66) for third place on countback.
