The escalator in Basildon town centre could be demolished and replaced with a lift and new stairway within a matter of months, it has been revealed.
Developers have agreed to carry out the work if they are allowed to convert Northgate House in the Town Square into flats.
The scheme came after a 78-year-old woman died from a brain haemorrhage two days after falling down the broken escalator in April this year.
Dorothy Parker, of Kents Hill Road, Benfleet, was knocked off balance by a broken handrail.
Basildon councillors will consider the proposal at next Tuesday's development control committee. Council officers have recommended approval and there have been no objections.
