A rapid response has been made by Brentwood Council in a bid to ease Shenfield residents fears that travellers will move back onto the Officers Meadow site in Chelmsford Road.
However these moves have not completely satisfied residents who are still concerned over its future.
It has been three years since traveller families were moved off the Green Belt site but fears were reawoken when reports were made to the council of trees and hedges being cut down and burnt on the site.
These concerns were escalated further when the land appeared on a website operated by the Strategic Land Agency advertising plots for sale.
The Officers Meadows pages on the site have since disappeared but the council has remained vigilant and officers have put into action an Article Four Directive banning the owner from dividing the land up and selling it.
One Shenfield resident who did not want to be identified said he was concerned the land owner would instead apply for planning permission to build something else on the Green Belt Land.
Deputy Leader of the council, Cllr Frank Kenny said: "As soon as this land started to be cleared councillors sought swift action to find out what was happening.
"The Article Four Directive gives Brentwood Borough Council extensive powers to act if it looks as if this site is being developed in anyway without the benefit of planning permission in advance."
