Dean Macey finished in fourth place in the decathlon thanks to a good display in the 1500m.
The Canvey Islander finished second in his heat to leapfrog Chiel Warners of Holland.
Roman Sebrle from the Czech Republic won the event, American Bryan Clay took silver and Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan won bronze.
Macey saw his chances of a medal evaporate earlier in the day, when he only managed 4.40m in the pole vault.
His best throw in the javelin was only 58.46m, way below his personal best of 64.03, but it still allowed him close on Warners.
He started the second day in good form, throwing a personal best of 48.34m in the discus having ran 14.56 seconds in the 110m hurdles.
