Despite eventually losing to champions elect Saffron Walden, Westcliff put forward a spirited display and now look good bets to retain their Premier Division status.

They are currently fourth from bottom, 23 clear of penultimate club Shenfield and a decent points haul from next week's clash with Hainault and Clayhall, lying third, should be enough to ensure safety.

They picked up six here after captain John Pratt played a real skipper's role with his first century of the season.

Put into bat after losing the toss, Westcliff looked set for a real drubbing when they stood at 45-4.

However, Pratt and John Waddingham (42) came together in a fine fifth wicket stand of 105 and Westcliff eventually finished on 231-9 in their 66 overs with Pratt finishing on 66.

Walden eventually got the 20 points they needed to remain clear favourites for the title - they head nearest rivals Wanstead by 20 - but Westcliff certainly never made it easy for them.

They bowled and fielded well and both Ben Clarke (4-70) and Eric Zehner (3-39) put forward splendid bowling performances.

Giles Ecclestone put forward his usual chanceless batting display for the top dogs and ended on 116. Wilkins gave good backing with 61.
