Pubs, clubs and restaurants are among more than 500 organisations being asked their views on a new licensing strategy which could affect everyone in the district.
Basildon Council is clearing the way to take control of licensing next February. To prepare, the council is asking interested parties to share their views on the council's new three-year policy.
Copies of the draft policy documents will be sent out to all existing licensed premises, business associations, residents' groups and statutory bodies.
They have until November 18 to send their comments on the document to the council.
Once licensing powers have been passed to local authorities, it will negate the need for premises to apply for separate licences for selling alcohol and entertainment functions.
Basildon Council portfolio holder for environment Stephen Hillier urged local people to get involved in the consultation process.
He said: "This is one of the most important pieces of licensing legislation we have seen in a long time, which will affect everyone who lives in the district, including those who operate licensed premises, stage entertainment or sell alcohol.
"We are determined to use our new powers to achieve a balance between the rights of the licensed trade and people who want to enjoy themselves and protecting residents whose quality of life may be affected by alcohol-related activity."
The full draft policy document will soon be available on the council website at www.basildondistrict.com but anyone wanting a paper copy can order one by calling the council's environmental health department on 01268 294280.
