Dean Macey, competing in the decathlon, has thrown a personal best of 48.34m in the discus.
The Canvey Islander fell back to seventh despite a good 14.56 seconds in the sprint hurdles, the first event of the day.
But his discus attempt moved him back to fourth, his overnight position, with the pole vault, javelin and 1500m to come later today.
Macey is 192 points behind third-placed Bryan Clay of the USA, with Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan in the lead ahead of world record holder Roman Sebrle.
