A war veteran is finally receiving recognition for his role in the liberation of France with the presentation of a commemorative medal tomorrow.
At last - proud John Maruszewski Picture: ROB BROWNE
John Maruszewski, 80, of Marlow Gardens, Southend, is travelling to Caen, in France, to collect a personalised medal from the French government.
British, American and Canadian troops have already collected medals marking their efforts. Now it is the turn of 50 Poles.
Mr Maruszewski joined the Polish Army when he was 15 and travelled to many European countries before going to Normandy in 1944.
He said: "I'm one of the many who fought there. But there's only a few of us left.
"I wanted to tell the world the Poles took part, too." His role was in communications working in Sherman tanks near the observation point.
