The chief executive of Castle Point Council today hinted he was set to quit.

Barry Rollinson spoke after a damning report by the Audit Commission criticised the council for poor performance.

Speaking from his Leigh home today, Mr Rollinson was asked if he was going to resign. He said: "It's a possibility."

He was responding to rumours he was to leave his post today.

But he said: "That's not true. I'm not doing anything today except going to work."

He was asked if the council was being run by a Government inspector, but he said: "No. The council is still being run by the controlling administration.

"I'm not making any more comment."
