The youngster impressed in the heart of the England under-21 rearguard during their 3-1 win over Ukraine in midweek, despite usually featuring at right back for the Irons.
And now he is to get the opportunity to repeat that success in the claret and blue shirt as manager Alan Pardew faces a defensive injury crisis.
Christian Dailly's knee problem will keep him out for two or three months, while fellow central defender Andy Melville damaged his hamstring playing for Wales in their midweek 2-0 win in Latvia.
"Anton has been knocking on my door to play in the centre," said Pardew.
"Now he's going to get his chance and we need him to step up to the plate for us.
"He has improved a lot over the year I've been here. As an athlete he's a real specimen and he's very quick.
Pardew also confirmed that young Scottish international right-back Maurice Ross could be joining in time for Saturday's trip to Crewe.
