The 58-year-old retired firefighter is set to represent Britain in the Games next week in the field of clay pigeon shooting.
Mayes said: "The Games have been going for years and, despite them being held all over the world, including last year's venue of Spain, this year they are being held in Beverley.
"Of all the far-flung places I could have been going, it's ironic that this year's event is in Yorkshire!"
Mayes - who has scooped a haul of trophies - has been clay pigeon shooting for 25 years.
"It started with me shooting pigeons over a farmer's field before I eventually moved on to clays," he said.
Mayes originally competed in clay pigeon shooting during his 30-year spell as a station officer at Braintree.
