A storm is brewing over a bid to knock down a historic village pub.
Protesters at Great Holland have applied to have the building listed in a bid to block the demolition.
The Lion's Den, which dates back to the 1700s, has been closed for more than two years.
Residents have already complained to councillors they are being denied a key village facility.
More than 170 protest letters have been delivered to Tendring Council.
Leading campaigner Andy Joslin said: "They would be destroying the heart and soul of the village.
Owner Joseph Gilbert wants to demolish the present building in Little Clacton Road and build a new pub, with a restaurant and living accommodation further back off the road, plus parking spaces.
