The free event, called D-Day for Democracy, at the Civic Centre, Victoria Avenue, included a tour of the building taking in the council chambers and an opportunity to put questions to the council's youth champion, Pat Rayner.
There was a chance to hear more about the Southend Youth Council and information was available for those interested in taking part.
Head of Southend youth service Michael Bracey said: "Many young people are interested in politics and lots actually get involved through school councils and committees.
"This event was an excellent opportunity to find out more about how the council works."
