A man was trapped in his car for an hour before firefighters using specialist cutting equipment were able to help free him.
The man is believed to have been travelling in the vehicle with his wife and 16-year-old son.
A spokesman for Essex Ambulance Service said the accident happened on the A12 Colchester-bound carriageway just before Boreham at about 2.15am today.
Three ambulances, a rapid response unit and an ambulance manager rushed to the scene arriving seven minutes after receiving the callout.
The spokesman said: "Three patients from the same family were conveyed to Broomfield Hospital.
"The 16-year old son suffered head and facial injuries, the mother received cuts and abrasions and the father had an injury to his arm."
He added the family were believed to have been returning from a holiday.
