The war memorial in Heybridge looks set to stay put after a report warned moving it would put the limestone structure at risk.

Parish councillors were considering moving the 4.5 metre monument away from its prominent position by the Goldhanger Road to the rear of the cemetery it currently fronts.

Several councillors had claimed the memorial got dirty quickly by the busy road and services were being interrupted by the noise from passing cars.

The council splashed out £759 on a structural engineer's report which has rubbished concerns about the effect of traffic pollution on the monument.

It states: "There is no visual evidence of stone decay. The arises are so sharp, the monument could have been carved yesterday."

Heybridge Parish Council is due to consider the report and decide what to do with the memorial when members meet on Thursday evening.
