The roof collapsed, causing severe damage to the first floor of the semi-detached house in Denver Drive, Basildon, as firefighters fought to control 20ft flames.
A leading firefighter said he had never seen lightning cause a fire so severe.
Luckily, the occupants, including two children, were not at home.
Adjoining neighbour, Barbara Braithwaite, said: "We were woken by the noise of the lightning. It was such a loud crack."
Russel Crane, 31, who lives opposite actually saw the lightning strike.
He said: "It was an explosion of white light and noise.
"We were knocked back by the force. It was unbelievable."
Firefighters successfully tackled the blaze before being called back when it became apparent the roof was going to collapse.
Three crews from Basildon, Hadleigh and Canvey, plus an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene.
