Police have received important new information about an unsolved murder that shocked Colchester 30 years ago.
The death of Kay O'Connor in 1974 led to a huge police operation, but the killer was never found.
Today Essex Police are reinvestigating after receiving a phone call from a person with information about the brutal killing.
The call was received within days of the launch of a Crimestoppers campaign for information on unsolved murders. Police received the information despite Mrs O'Connor's death not being a case featured in the campaign.
The murder took place on March 1, 1974, at Mrs O'Connor's house in Wickham Road, Colchester. She was found by a neighbour on her kitchen floor strangled and stabbed to death.
Police have never discovered a motive. The murderer had not sexually assaulted Mrs O'Connor or taken anything from her house. No-one saw the killer enter or leave the scene in Wickham Road.
An inquest in 1974 found Mrs O'Connor had been strangled, then her clothes were taken off and she was stabbed. Police found the kitchen knife used next to her bloodstained body.
Anyone with information on the murder of Kay O'Connor should ring 01245 457287 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
