Commuters faced traffic chaos today after a road traffic accident on the London-bound carriageway of the A12.
PC Trevor Fleet, of Stanway traffic police, said the accident happeend at 7.45am just past Rivenhall.
A man driving a Vauxhall Corsa car pulled out from a slip road and clipped the side of a lorry. Neither driver was injured, though the car was badly damaged.
PC Fleet said officers were forced to only allow one lane of the London-bound A12 to be used by commuters while they waited for a recovery vehicle to tow the car away.
This led to long tailbacks, particularly as it was rush hour.
Motorists then reported further delays to the Evening Gazette, saying a van was on fire on the Colchester-bound A12 between Hatfield Peverel and Marks Tey.
Drivers said lengthy queues had formed while waiting for firefighters to tackle the blaze.
