Bobby Bowry is in a race against the clock to be available for Colchester United's trip to Chesterfield this weekend.
The midfielder was absent from the team-sheet on Saturday after picking up a chest infection, according to U's physio Stuart Ayles.
Ayles said: "At the moment Bobby is on a course of antibiotics to help clear up the problem.
"We hope that he will be fit by then, but at the moment he's off training and is just resting up."
Bowry was in impressive form for the first two matches of the U's Coca-Cola League One campaign and Ayles has his fingers crossed he should be back in contention for the trip to Saltergate.
"Hopefully he should be able to come back alright," he said.
"However, something like this can leave you a bit down."
Fellow midfielder Kem Izzet is waiting on news from an MRI scan on his ankle that he injured against Watford in a pre-season friendly.
