A 55-year-old Southend driver was killed in a head-on collision with a vehicle travelling the wrong way along the A130.
The man killed was driving a silver Toyota Avensis along the southbound track of the A130 at Ivydene Bridge, Rawreth.
His vehicle was in collision with a red BMW heading north on the southbound track.
A red Chrysler Cruiser, avoiding the aftermath of the accident, was also in collision with a red Escort.
The two occupants of the Escort and the BMW driver suffered minor injuries.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident at 1.15am on Saturday and especially wish to contact the driver of a small white car which passed the accident shortly afterwards, who, they believe, may have vital information.

A 36-year old Dunmow man arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving has been released on police bail until October 9.
