A South Essex charity for under-supported children is celebrating a Lottery handout of £227,000.

Rainer, which provides care, support and new opportunities for youngsters aged between ten and 25, was awarded the cash by the Big Lottery Fund to help finance its peer education services in Basildon and Harlow until 2006.

The peer education scheme works with young people aged 12 and upwards.

It gives them advice on sexual health, substance misuse and bullying. It also provides help with assertiveness and other personal skills.

The mentoring service works with young women between 14 and 18 who are experiencing difficulties at home.

Rainer regional director Sali Walker said: "Thanks to this Lottery funding, 24 young women will receive intensive support and more than 2,000 young people will receive information on health and education they wouldn't get elsewhere.

"We are now able to set up a new peer education service in Harlow to complement the one we have in Basildon. It's great news."
