Royal Mail staff were today "delighted" with the successful launch of a single daily delivery system in Southend.
The company was keen to avoid the mistakes it made when it introduced a single delivery system in Basildon earlier this year where it led to huge delays.
The system, designed to deliver more mail in one go rather than in two daily deliveries, was introduced to the whole of Southend on July 26 following a trial in other parts of the borough.
A spokeswoman said: "Each postman or woman was consulted on the proposed changes to their delivery routes, and their views were listened to.
"Where our people encountered problems with their new walks, the manager, a union representative and the postman would all go out and walk the entire route."
In addition, they worked closely at every stage with the Communication Workers' Union, which represents mail carriers.
John O'Keefe, regional spokesman for watchdog Postwatch, said things did seem to have run more smoothly in Southend than they had in Basildon.
He said Postwatch had visited Basildon last month and found Royal Mail had made improvements there so he suspected it
