Here comes the Costa del Col-chester!

Council bosses have finalised plans to turn the run-down Hythe port into a swanky marine basin.

They want to build a lock to keep the River Colne artificially high so boats can use the marina.

But dreams of transforming the port are hanging in the balance.

They hinge on the Government stumping up a whopping £13m to pay for the lock system.

Colchester Council has already passed the first hurdle after getting the green light to bid for the cash.

Executive director Mike Crouch said: "We got through the first round of the bidding process and are still in the frame.

"We feel we have a very good case for this funding to come to east Colchester."

The marina would act as a magnet for millions of pounds of business and leisure investment, creating almost 2,000 jobs.

But the council admits the lock project will only go ahead if they secure cash help.
