Fears of a new pub or bar being built in Leigh have increased after the Co-op bought up two rival food stores.

It has taken over Warder's stores in the Broadway and Leigh Road.

The Co-op says it plans to operate them alongside its existing large store in the Broadway, which is itself being expanded into the Fives record shop next door.

However, a planning application for the Warder's premises in the Broadway has sparked speculation that it would be converted into a restaurant or pub or even a nightclub.

Leigh Lib Dem councillor Peter Wexham thought the Leigh Road store would probably be turned into a Co-op, but pointed out the shop in the Broadway was virtually opposite the main supermarket.

He said: "I can't imagine them making that into another Co-op because it would be in direct competition."

Mr Wexham added the supermarket chain would be able to sell the store for a much higher price if it secured permission to sell food and alcohol there.

He feared the shop was large enough to be converted into a pub or nightclub and said: "There are all ready too many of them."

A spokeswoman for the Co-op confirmed it had submitted a planning application to use 15 Broadway as a food and drink premises but said it was simply keeping options open.
