A new play area is on the cards for Layer de la Haye.

The parish council is half way to its target of raising £40,000 for a new facility, including catering for teenagers.

The existing play area, near the village hall and primary school, has been vandalised over the past couple of years.

Now the council wants to create a new area, including a structure where teenagers can meet.

Last year, the school children were challenged to design a new-look area and Anne Hughes, one of the councillors behind the project, said they did a wonderful job.

Project organiser Mark Jones said the plan was to move away from the existing site, which became very wet in bad weather, and site the new area somewhere else in the field.

A wood-chip surface like the current one has been ruled out and a mixture of special surfacing and grass is likely to be used instead.

The council has already been pledged £10,000 by Colchester Council, £2,000 from Cory Environmental Trust, £2,000 from another charity and will use £6,000 from its own reserves.

The remaining £20,000 needs to be raised and pupils' parents are likely to be asked to come up with fundraising ideas.
