A goal two minutes from time by strike star Lee Boylan allowed Canvey to complete their pre-season build-up with a draw in Sussex last night.
The hosts, who did superbly to battle through from Ryman Division One and the play-offs to earn a place in the new Nationwide South set-up, took an eighth minute lead when Luke Cornwall shot home from the penalty spot following a foul by visiting goalkeeper Ashley Harrison.
Boylan came on as a half-time substitute, but missed out on the chance of a 54th-minute equaliser when he blazed a spot-kick over the bar.
However, Boylan ensured the Islanders avoided the fate of new Nationwide Conference colleagues Aldershot, who lost 2-0 at Lewes on Saturday, when he headed home Chris Bourne's 88th minute cross.
Gulls now turn their full attention to their first ever Conference game on Saturday when they make the near 700-mile round trip to Carlisle.
