A 17-year-old boy from Witham is recovering at home after being wounded when a bottle was thrown at his head.
The victim had to have staples inserted into his skull at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, after the unprovoked attack in Rickstones Road, Witham.
The boy and his friend were walking back home along the road just after midnight on Saturday when it happened.
Police are now hunting the teenage attacker and have released a description in the hope of tracking him down. They are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
A spokesman for Essex police said: "As they approached the junction with Cross Road a bottle was seen to be thrown from the opposite pavement and landed on the victim's head.
"A young man was then seen running down an alleyway which leads to the nearby Elms public house and playing fields."
The attacker is described as white, around 5ft tall and of slim build. He was aged in his mid-teens and had short brown hair. At the time he was wearing a dark coloured tracksuit top and bottoms.
