A decision is to be made this week on which creative youngster's design will be transformed into a bronze sculpture to sit on Canvey seafront.
More than 30 island teenagers have drawn up designs for the project, which has successfully applied for a lottery grant of £16,000.
The competition was launched four months ago under the lottery's Young Roots scheme, which encourages young people to take an interest in their personal, social and cultural history.
Youth worker Sue Danials, who has been heavily involved with the project, said: "Too often people tar young people all with the same brush, but this competition has shown that there really are some very creative and innovative youngsters on Canvey."
The entries are to be judged by a panel including sculptor Pam Taylor, Emily Redgate from the development team at Castle Point Council, and Canvey 2000's Dennis Williams.
