Glen Cousquer, from South Beech Veterinary Surgery, has been inundated with injured cats hit by cars on Southend Road.

He said: "I had a family in who have lost two cats in the space of just six months. Obviously this is very distressing for them.

"If cats are getting hit at such a rate then it is only a matter of time before a child gets killed."

Nicola Graham, 22, had her three-year-old cat, Maggie, put down on Tuesday after suffering serious injuries being hit by a car.

She said: "This is our second cat that has died on Southend Road. We are devastated."

Mr Cousquer thinks the council should do more to stop motorists exceeding the 30mph limit.

Malcolm Buckley, leader of Basildon Council, said it would be difficult to introduce any other speed restrictions on the road.
