A campaigning MP today demanded the removal of a former roundabout on the A127 which has become an accident blackspot.

Angela Smith has written to county roads chiefs calling for the old Fortune of War roundabout to be taken away and the road simply straightened.

She spoke just weeks after a lorry overturned trying to navigate the bend at the old roundabout, used by around 70,000 motorists every day.

Mrs Smith, Labour MP for Basildon and East Thurrock, said: "Aside from the current delays in traffic, I am concerned that had the lorry been carrying a load more dangerous than paper, the results could have been more devastating."

Mrs Smith has also urged Essex County Council to take immediate action in signposting the stretch of road.

Rodney Bass, Tory county council portfolio holder for transport, said any work at the Fortune of War would need substantial investment.

He said: "Any help Angela Smith can get from the Department of Transport to ensure the Government starts to provide adequate funding for the A127/A13 corridor would be very helpful."
