A coalition of local authorities, including Uttlesford District Council, have been given a court date to present their legal challenge opposing the expansion of Stansted and Luton airports.

It will join forces with Essex and Hertfordshire county councils and East and North Herts district councils in court on December 13 2004.

They aim to prevent the plans of a second runway at Stansted and an extended runway at Luton.

The councils are particularly worried that the plans put forward by BAA for Stansted represents a 'land grab' that will leave the company the chance to expand the aiport up to 120million passengers a year.

Deputy Leader of Uttlesford District Council, Cllr Peter Wilcock, said: "I'm pleased to see that progress is being made in this case. It's a shame that we had to resort to legal action but when the democratic process let us down we were left with no option. It is pleasing to see the number of claimants who are challenging the government's white paper. It is regrettable that we have had to resort to the courts in this matter."
