No immediate action will be taken on market traders who use the pavement and road to sell goods, despite safety fears.

Members of the Town Centre Strategy Group were told by Peter Tattersley of Braintree council at a meeting that nothing would be done about the market situation.

At a strategy group meeting held earlier this year, fears were aired about market traders serving customers on the road as well as the pavements.

Members suggested stricter regulations could be introduced if traders did not conform.

Group member David Dickens warned at yesterday's meeting there would be a major calamity in the area sooner or later.

But Mr Tattersley said no action was to be taken and it was likely to stay that way.
