Hollywood star Kristen Scott Thomas has joined forces with Essex fund-raisers Len and Jane Meakin to launch an appeal for a charity which supports children worldwide.

Len Meakin, of Dedham, is urging people to watch a special programme about the work of Hope and Homes for Children, which will be screened on BBC1's Lifeline programme on Sunday at 5.10pm.

The charity celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and has launched an appeal to help orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children in the poorest countries across Africa and Eastern Europe.

Star of The English Patient and the Horse Whisperer Kristen Scott Thomas is the vice-president of the appeal and along with Len Meakin and his wife Jane, is urging people in Essex to get involved.

Mr and Mrs Meakin are part of the Essex Support Group, a voluntary team of people who give up their time to raise funds and awareness of the charity.

The charity provides families and foster homes for children who are without homes.
