Southend skipper Wayne Spear is planning a winter rebuild in a bid to get the seasiders promoted next season.

The Southchurch Park club's first XI were relegated from Division Two of the Shepherd Neame Essex League last year.

They have suffered an indifferent year in the basement division and now Spear is looking to a fresh attack on the promotion places in 2005.

"We are resigned to the fact that it has not been our year and we have to start building for next year," Spear said.

"We have been going out and playing our game but now we have to look at the other teams' weaknesses over the next few games because we are going to be playing those teams next year."

The seasiders currently sit seventh in the Division Three table having picked up just three wins and three draws from 13 matches.

Spear has identified the areas that need to be addressed. The main ones are a lack of consistency and too much reliance on star players such as Numan Khan and Ben Wathen.

"If things go wrong for them the others are not rising to the challenge," Spear added.
