Bosses at Basildon Hospital are considering making the main car park two storeys high, it was revealed today.
The hospital's director of projects and facilities Jenny Galpin said putting an extra deck on top of the current car park was an option to cope once a £59m heart centre is built on site.
A multi-storey car park was originally proposed for the southern boundary of the hospital adjacent to Dry Street where the new heart centre will be built.
But Mrs Galpin said: "That was originally looked at, but we thought it would be better to put the additional parking at the front where the majority of patients will be looking for spaces.
"We are looking at the possibility of having an extra deck on the main car park."
Basildon Council's development control and traffic management committee has already given planning permission for a car park with 242 spaces adjacent to where the new centre will be built.
