Vital work to fix flooding drains finally began after a six- year wait, but suddenly stopped due to an apparent cash crisis.

Worries - Shirley and Len Stillwell with neighbours Yvonne Jenkins and Pauline Smith

Dismayed residents of Beach Road, Canvey, reckoned Castle Point Council pulled the plug on the scheme to repair drains and replace wonky footpaths, after running out of money.

Yvonne Jenkins, 48, of Beach Road, Canvey, said: "This road has been shortlisted for work for six years and now they are going to leave it half done.

"They have been doing footpaths and drains, but my argument is there are no drains. What they call drains are just a piece of pipe going from the kerbs to the verges.

"I've sent in photos of the road all flooded, and other residents have complained."

However, Castle Point borough secretary John Waugh said: "I don't think the budget has run out.

"We are just being cautious.

"We need to do a proper costing before we carry on with the rest of the work."
