Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the collapse of an 84-year-old woman in her Clacton home.
Gas had been smelt coming from the house, but when firefighters arrived it appeared the property had been ransacked.
They alerted police and paramedics to the home in St Osyth Road, at 8.20pm yesterday
A spokesman for Clacton fire service said: "An elderly woman had collapsed in her house, which smelt strongly of gas.
"She was brought out by firefighters and placed in the care of ambulance staff.
"The gas was isolated and the house made safe and well ventilated."
The woman was taken to Colchester General Hospital for treatment.
