A three-day exhibition was today opening to show residents how a run down shopping precinct could be transformed into a thriving centre.

Lakehill Investments, which owns the Laindon Centre, is inviting residents along to speak with representatives and look at the ambitious planning application it has submitted to Basildon Council.

The run-down centre has been the subject of much debate over the past few years as traders and shoppers called for improvements.

Lakehill proposes to demolish the centre and build 21 new shops, a supermarket and 138 flats on the site.

Mike Fowler, director of Lakehill Investments, said: "We hope that all those interested in the future of the Laindon Centre will be able to come to our exhibition."

The exhibition, at Unit 40, Main Hall, Laindon Centre, Laindon, opened today from 10am until 5pm.

It will also be open tomorrow from 10am to 5pm and on Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
